The report written by Herodotus, who visited the pyramids 2000 years after they were built, is interpreted in different ways.
It is either dismissed as absolute nonsense or accepted as evidence of the use of leverage equipment.
Herodotus was very close to the truth:
If we assume that inside the Cheops pyramid there is a step pyramid, then what Herodotus said would make sense.
This would however mean that the Egyptians in fact only really intended to build step pyramids.
