My new methods and findings

The method of determining the horizontal by means of water was probably the most popular. They are supposed to have used instruments that are similar to a spirit level. None of these have ever been tested in an experiment.

Optical leveling:

With the aid of a vat of water located in the middle between two surveying poles, a horizontal can be determined with extreme precision and with the simplest of tools. This was proved in a practical experiment in which the margin of error was only 0.5 cm over 240 m.
